8x8" Limited edition art print
I am really excited to be releasing my new art print today! Going live for sale from 12.00pm, the new limited edition print of 100 copies, is of an original oil on canvas I made this year called 'Painting for 18 Musicians'.
Painting for 18 Musicians is about the possibilities of using colour to express sound - taking a deeper dive into the ideas that developed in Implicate Order, of visualising musical time, movement, and rhythm. Referencing the continuous curves of sound waves, and how a digital sound recording is split into tiny discrete chunks (many thousands per second). Lorna explores her relationship between music and painting, how both art forms 'break' with the natural world and create a space for abstract, even spiritual thought.
A high quality art print on watercolour paper. With a beautiful texture that echos the canvas of the original oil painting. Each is signed, numbered and D.O.T. Records stamped. This Implicate Order print is limited to 100 copies only.
Head over to my shop if you'd like to give one a home!

30x40" oil on canvas
This new painting is about exploring the possibilities of using colour to express sound - taking a deeper dive into the ideas that developed Implicate Order, of visualising musical time, movement, and rhythm.
After Implicate Order, I couldn't decide 'what' to paint. We were still mostly in lockdown and Implicate Order had started out as a drawing of Nick's home studio in our flat. Besides plants, I couldn't really think of anything interesting at home to draw.
Eventually I felt the idea that I found most fascinating painting Implicate Order was the process of 'visualising' the music. During lockdown, music was the thing readily available via records & streaming, so I began to 'visualise music' as my subject to ‘observe’.
The painting took form while I was thinking about the continuous curves of sound waves, and how a digital sound recording is split into tiny discrete chunks (many thousands per second). I was listing to Alice Coltrane and the new album by Emma-Jean Thackray, and when lockdown lifted we went to see a live performance of Steve Reich's 'Music for 18 Musicians', a minimalist composition that blew my mind.
Bringing these elements together I started working to explore my relationship between music and painting, how both art forms 'break' with the natural world and create a space for abstract, even spiritual thought.

At 30x40" it is a labour of love, each line taking around 30 mins - I am getting quicker. Like most people, I've been listing to a lot of music during lockdown which has become a great source of inspiration for creating new paintings. The lines are based on units of sound within digital music, coming together to form a visual wave.
I've also been reading a lot on colour theroy, from old school Goethe to Hans Albers. Then putting these ideas into practice on the canvas, to see how the visual can speak to audible. Hopefully I shall reach the other side of the canvas before the year is out!

The little guys are live! Delighted to announce that limited edition art prints of the 'Implicate Order' artwork are now available to buy on bandcamp. Feeling so lucky to be able to collaborate with talented muscian Nick Walters - we have different styles but we speak the same language.
Nick is pulling out all the stops forming his own label D.O.T. Records to put out new music by himself & other musicians. We are finding new ways forward.
If anyone who's already pre-ordered the record would like to add on the print we will refund the additional p+p as the print will fit in the record.

This weekend I've been breathing new life into in my wee home art studio - after weeks of good tv, food & getting to know my sofa oh so well.
It's been a productive time working on my new art prints. I've brought all production in-house. DIY all the way. Aka I may never leave our flat again.
The awesome tune on the video is "The Underdog" the new single by jazz man of the hour Nick Walters.

Latest artwork 'Implicate Order' is now finished. It is my biggest painting yet. I really enjoyed taking my time working through the process of abstraction, composition & colour. It started life as a simple pencil drawing of a music room & grew out of this original idea into the final painting.
There is more life to this painting yet. keep your eyes & especially your ears peeled.

Huge love & special thanks to Nick Walters & 22a Music. Delighted to see my paintings on ACTIVE IMAGINATION the new album by Nick Walters. Long on the UK Jazz scene, Nick is one of the most innovative and sought after trumpet players to come out of London. Nick sat for his portrait with me last year in Berlin and we developed it into a back-and-front pair that went onto become the cover for Active Imagination. He is totally inspiring to work with, always excited and passionate about the potential of art & music to move us. He returns to 22a with his second album for the label - a free and spiritual journey into avant-garde jazz!

Hackney Wick Life Drawing is the best life drawing in London in my view. I attend every Wednesday evening, and look forward to settling down with a drink and getting lost for two hours in drawing. Run by the talented Ben Wakenling since 2014, in the golden light of Stour Space, an artist run space on Fish Island, it offers an open approach, less tutoring more facilitating a space to be creative.
I am delighted to be showing two painting at the Hackney WickED art event this weekend, as part of the Hackney Wick Life Drawing Society show. This pair of paintings are lined up as the artwork for the next Nick Walters jazz album landing later this year on 22a Records. Keep your eyes and ears peeled!

The Sounds of Riot Jazz. Turning nine musicians into a painting. Really enjoyed designing the artwork for the new 'On Job' EP by UK Jazz band Riot Jazz. A high energy group needed some high energy painting.
The concept is based on the three primary colours, to represent three sections of the band. Each member has a portrait using the three colours, which are then combined to make the whole.
I was thinking about how a band works. Each person brings their unique skills and personality. Each plays their part as an induvial, which all combines to make the larger band. Which of course, leads to music.
The paintings also became the framework for their new music video 'Deet Darh' single, which was produced by the multi talented Riot Jazz member and film maker Steve Pycroft.
To celebrate, the band are going on tour over the next couple of months. Grab a ticket for a city near you and order your copy of the new EP via the excellent bandcamp.

Punch. A strike with the fist. A mixture of several fruit juices and spices. This group are a bit of both.
Delighted to have collaborated with four amazing East London artists to put on this group show. We are exhibiting at the dynamic arts space ‘The Hive’ in Dalston, East London.
I am showing a selection of my recent portraits that explore the theme of hidden identity. Faces are concealed or partially abstracted. As we strive to know ourselves and each other, never quite finishing the job. Made of mixed media painting and collage.
